Senate passed early retirement plans for public school and state employees

After much delay, the Senate today passed early retirement plans for public school and state employees.
"This may not be as popular as some of the things we do," said Sen. Mark JANSEN (R-Cutlerville), "but it's part of our jobs."
SB 1226 sponsored by Jansen passed 22-16, with Sens. Roger KAHN (R-Saginaw) and Mickey SWITALSKI (D-Roseville) crossing over. SB 1227 sponsored by Sen. Jud GILBERT (R-Algonac) passed on the same vote.
This comes after lawmakers and Budget Director Bob EMERSON hashed out a stripped-down version over the last couple weeks. The bills would save $246 million General Fund for Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, according to the Senate Fiscal Agency.
NOTE: The legislation now goes to the House we several changes are expected.
