LANSING -- The Michigan House has voted to give K-12 public schools $55 to $110 more per student in the budget year that starts in October.
Now lawmakers will have to work out a compromise.
The K-12 spending plan approved 61-48 Tuesday would provide increases dependent on how well a school district is now funded. Districts that get the per-student minimum of $7,204 would get the biggest increases.
The Senate's K-12 plan calls for increases ranging from $71 to $142 per student. Gov. Jennifer Granholm earlier this year proposed increases ranging from $108 to $216, but that was before fiscal experts lowered estimates of how much tax revenue is coming in.
Michigan's struggling economy is limiting the revenue that goes to the state.
Note: Nothing is real until the conference committee agrees. The House put in phony numbers to take to the bargaining table.
