Can community members use your outdoor athletic facilities?

Does your district have a policy/procedure/philosophy statement for handling conflicts over the non-school use of athletic facilities, particularly by community groups/individuals/board members who believe they should be able to use facilities for community league activities or even "pick-up" games?

What is your policy on allowing students to retake classes which they have already passed?

We have a number of seniors who wish to retake classes in which they received an A- earlier in their high school careers.  The purpose is to restore their 4-points so they may be considered for Valedictory honors.  This is uncharted territory for us. This situation has come about because we base class rank solely on an unweighted GPA. Thus, Val and Sal often become a farce, going to the kids who are the most GPA conscious and not those who learn the most!!!!!!  Any ideas or suggestions?????

Thanks,

Please share your policies you may have developed or implemented for employees/volunteers district-wide regarding background checks, etc.

What professional development topics would you like to see offered as seminars or webinars in 2008-2009?

MASSP would like to hear from you about professional learning opportunities you would like to participate in during the 2008-09 school year.
We have already scheduled:

Classroom Discipline: Establishing Respect and Responsibility--Todd Johnson, November 13, 2008 and February 25, 2009

MASSP Spring Law Update--Lisa Swem, April 29, 2009

Thanks for taking a couple of minutes to respond.

Three yes or no (and very diverse) questions.

1. Does your school/district mandate completion of the MME for graduation?

2. Does your school/district charge book fees for textbook use?

3. Does your school/district mandate the use of face masks during softball/baseball practice and games (besides the catcher)?

Thanks for the help,

Tony Habra

Milan High Academy -- Presentation on Algebra, Freshmen Transition, Senior Rigor, English 9, Student Leadership

Hello,

Just inviting you to visit my blog regarding the Milan
High School Academy, especially regarding Algebra I success. We have
been fortunate at Milan High to work with a consultant on High School
transformation the last few years and would like to present the work on
Monday, June 16th (a brochure is available on the blog).

After school remediation or tutoring programs for homeless students.

I am looking for a tutoring or remedial program for students who are classified as homeless.  I found out today that Title 1 funds are available for this program and need to have something in place soon.  Any suggestions or resourses would be greatly appreciated.

Excessive school-related absences

Does anyone have a good solution or policy dealing with the excessive amount of times students are missing from school during the spring due to athletics, field trips, etc?

MDE wants to know...Do you have or know of any successful programs for 9th graders focused on drop out prevention?

If so, please identify the school/program and give a brief description of your model. MASSP will pass the information along to MDE. (See related story in Featured News)

What schools out there have a Guided Academics class or similar type of intervention class?

How do students get selected for the class? What curriculum do you use for it?

Senior Debt Collection

Does anyone have policy on senior debt collection? Do you or are you able to withold their ability to attend things like Prom or other after school activities?

I am curious if any schools have or are planning to implement a policy regarding energy drinks?

We have several parents/board members that have voiced concerns about kids drinking monster drinks and the potential for health problems.

Have any schools renamed Debate Class to me certification needs?

What is the proper protocol during graduation for a student who has passed away?

We have a student who, as a kindergartner, was hit by one of our school buses and killed.  2008 was her graduating date and we are honoring her during the ceremony.  We have an empty chair for her in the row and we are presenting the family with an honorary diploma.  Also, her picture will be part of our slide show before graduation begins.

What I am looking for is any protocal or procedures anyone has used for such presentations in the past.

How do I vote in the MASSP Elections?

Does your school district require the high school students to take the ACT/MME as a graduation requirement.

How many high schools require their students to take the state assessment, currently the ACT/MME, as a graduation requirement and has that it caused any problems?

Is there any interest in the Teacher Cadet curriculum training to be hosted in Michigan?

Saginaw Valley State University holds the site licence to host the Teacher Cadet training for the South Carolina Teached Cadet curriculum.  We are interested in starting a program and I am looking for other districts that might be interested in the training at SVSU.  They would like around 28 participants to host a training.  Please let me know if you are interested in the Teacher Cadet Training Program.

Have their been any changes in the last year or so to attendence policies per Public Act(s)? If so, do you know the P.A. number

It is my understanding that the State is moving away from demanding "seat time" and absences/tardies will not be able to affect a student's academic performance directly.  Is this true?  If so, can you direct me to some more information?
