HOUSE PASSES SCHOOL RETIREE WORK EXPANSION

People who retire from public schools in Michigan and come back to work for those entities during an emergency would get more time to do so under legislation that passed the House on Thursday.

HB 4593 (105-1) extends the number of years a retiree can work in a school facing a "critical shortage" or "emergency situation" from six to eight. The legislation also removes the July 1, 2011 sunset for that provision.

The next ten weeks is the season for non-renewal for school administrator employment contracts. If your contract is at risk, please call us early in the process.
Please, don’t wait. More than once I’ve had members call asking for help and telling me that the Board meeting was scheduled that afternoon!
Please, know your contract. You wouldn’t believe the members we speak with who don’t have a contract, don’t know where their contract is, or haven’t read their contract.

Saturday, March 1st, the association hosted an event for members to come together to share their experiences and ideas about contract strategies for their local bargaining association. Twenty-five MASSP members listened as Tom White, Executive Director of the school business officials gave insight to school funding, the Michigan economy, and retirement issues to understand when at the bargaining table. Tom Derderian, the labor attorney used by MASSP advised on strategies and answered questions specific to member contracts and group obligations. After Mr.
