Flanagan Staying at State Board of Education

With the announcement Monday that Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan would not be a finalist for president of Eastern Michigan University, he told the State Board of Education at its meeting Tuesday that he was not planning to leave his current post.
"You're kinda stuck with me," Mr. Flanagan told the board, drawing applause from board members and department staff. "I love working with the state board and this team."
"I'm glad it's behind us," said board President Kathleen Straus (D-Bloomfield Township).

Central Michigan Drops 'Promise' for Students Starting in Fall

Saying it must bow to fiscal realities and a lack of state funding, the board of trustees at Central Michigan University decided Thursday to drop the renowned CMU Promise - that guaranteed students their tuition would not increase for five years - for students enrolling in the fall 2008 class.

The promise would continue for students currently enrolled in the university. But beginning with the class of 2012, when it enters in the fall, tuition rates will be set annually for all students.
